Portrait of an Elegant Lady Holding a Fan
Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin was born in Paris to the family of a master-carpenter. In 1724 Chardin was accepted into the Academy of St. Luke, a rival to the Royal Academy, though lacking the latter’s royal patronage. In 1728, Chardin submitted two of his famous paintings to the Royal Academy and was accepted and made Associate and Academician. Chardin mainly created still-life and genre paintings.
