“Compassion,” an exhibition and fundraiser showcasing new artworks by emerging young artist Joy Son at the International Art Museum of America in San Francisco.

In a world often marked by division and hardship, compassion stands as a transformative force, bridging gaps and fostering a sense of shared humanity. My artwork seeks to explore and elevate the profound impact of empathy and understanding, aiming to reflect the delicate yet powerful nature of compassion in its various forms. Through visual narratives, I strive to communicate the essential role compassion plays in healing, connecting, and uplifting individuals and communities. By focusing on the vulnerability and strength found in moments of kindness, I hope to inspire viewers to reflect on their own capacity for compassion and its potential to make the world a more just and loving place.
About the Artist:
Joy Son
Joy Son is a 17-year-old artist based in Belmont, Massachusetts, and a Senior at Belmont High School, where she is currently under the direction of Mark Milowsky in her AP Art class. Her artwork explores themes of compassion and identity, focusing on her Korean American heritage, her family, and social, cultural, and political topics that are deeply meaningful to her.
Joy’s artistic journey began in the fifth grade under the guidance of Yulmae Kwon, and she continues to refine her skills at Studio Noma in Waltham, studying with Hyojin Song and Suyeon Ji. Her commitment to art has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious American Vision Award in 2023, alongside 20 other awards in one submission season from the Scholastic Art & Writing Organization. She began receiving recognition from Scholastic in 8th grade, followed by her first National Gold Award in 10th grade.
She received 1st place in the International Art Museum of America (IAMA) 2024 Youth Art Contest and 2024 DEGA International Art Association, and has won 1st place for two consecutive years (2022, 2023) in the Emerging Young Artists Art Competition in Massachusetts. Additionally, Joy was awarded 2nd place in the Art Collide 2024 International Competition, 3rd place in the 2024 JIA International Illustration Competition, and received an Honorable Mention in the Blue Space Gallery “Emerging Artist” Competition, further solidifying her place in the art world.
Beyond her personal artistic growth, Joy has developed a passion for teaching younger students, starting in her sophomore year of high school. Most recently, in the summer of 2024, she led a twelve-week art camp for thirteen students aged 8-16. She strives to be a source of encouragement and hope for young artists pursuing their own creative paths.
In the summer of 2024, Joy held solo art exhibitions at several senior homes in Massachusetts, sharing the world of art with the seniors who reside or visit there. Considering those who are physically unable to visit art galleries, she was motivated by the thought that bringing her artwork to senior centers for solo exhibitions could create more opportunities to share seniors’ interest and passion for art. The pure and passionate expressions of these seniors, who transcend age to enjoy and love art, were truly beautiful. Additionally, it provided a warm opportunity to engage in charitable activities together, sharing heartwarming love for their neighbors.
Joy also uses her artwork to support charitable causes. Through various exhibitions and galleries, she has fundraised for UNICEF and HEMEFund by selling prints of her artwork, donating 100% of the proceeds. These exhibitions have also allowed her to share her work with diverse communities, bridging connections across different ages and backgrounds, and she wants to continue healing and helping people through her passion for art.
Through her art and advocacy, Joy continues to make a meaningful impact both in the art world and beyond.

(한국어 이름-손 희노래) 는 현재 AP 미술 수업에서 마크 밀로우스키(Mark Milowsky) 의 지도
아래 작품 활동을 하고 있습니다. 그녀의 작품은 연민과 정체성을 주제로 하며, 그녀의 한국계

그녀의 예술에 대한 헌신은 2023년 내셔널 아메리칸 비전 어워드를 포함해 스콜라스틱 아트 &
라이팅 어워드 (Scholastic Art & Writing Awards) 에서 한 시즌에만 20개의 상(Regional &
National) 을 수상하는 등 수많은 상을 안겨주었습니다. 8학년 때부터 스콜라스틱에서 처음으로
인정을 받기 시작했으며, 10학년 때는 첫 번째 내셔널 골드 어워드를 수상했습니다.
조이는 2024년 국제미술박물관(IAMA) 청소년 미술 대회(International Art Museum of America
(IAMA) 2024 Youth Art Contest) 와 2024년 DEGA 국제 예술 협회(2024 DEGA International Art
Association) 에서 1위를 차지했으며, 매사추세츠의 떠오르는 젊은 예술가 미술 대회(Emerging
Young Artists Art Competition in Massachusetts) 에서 2022년과 2023년 2년 연속 1위를
차지했습니다. 또한, 2024년 아트 콜라이드 국제 대회(Art Collide 2024 International
Competition) 에서 2위, 2024년 JIA 국제 일러스트 대회(2024 JIA International Illustration
Competition) 에서 3위를 차지했고, 블루 스페이스 갤러리 “떠오르는 예술가” 대회(Blue Space
Gallery “Emerging Artist” Competition) 에서 장려상을 받아 예술계에서 젊은 예술인으로 그녀의
입지를 더욱 확고히 다졌습니다.
개인적인 예술적 성장 외에도, 조이는 고등학교 2학년 때부터 어린 학생들을 가르치는 것에
대한 열정을 키워왔습니다. 최근 2024년 여름에는 8세에서 16세 학생들을 대상으로 12주 동안
13명의 자녀들을 위한 아트섬머캠프를 이끌었습니다. 그녀는 예술을 추구하는 젊은
예술가들에게 격려와 희망의 원천이 되고자 노력하고 있습니다. 조이는 또한 자신의 예술을
통해 자선 활동을 지원하고 있습니다.
2024 여름, 메사츄세스에 있는 여러곳의 시니어 홈에서 아트 개인전을 열어 그곳에
거주하사거나 방문하시는 시니어 분들과 아트의 세계를 공유하는 시간들을 가졌습니다. 몸이
불편하셔서 아트 갤러리에 직접 오실수 없는 상황들을 고려하여 조이가 본인의 아트 작품들을
들고 직접 시니어 샌터룰 방문하여 개인전을 연다면 예술에 대한 시니어들의 관심과 사랑을
함께 나눌수 있는 기회를 더 쉽게 열어갈수 있을 것이라는 마음이 동기가 되어 시작했습니다.
나이를 뛰어넘어 아트를 사랑하고 아트 작품들을 마음껏 즐기고자 하는 시니어들의 순수하고
열정 가득한 모습은 참으로 아름다웠습니다. 또한 미국과 세계 지역의 이웃을 위해 함께
자선활동에 참여하여 힘이 되어주고 훈훈한 사랑을 나눌수 있는 따뜻한 기회를 함께 만들어
갈수 있었습니다.
다양한 전시회와 갤러리를 통해 그녀는 자신의 작품 판매(프린트 판매) 수익금 100%를
유니세프와 HEMEFund에 기부하며 기금을 마련했습니다. 이러한 전시회를 통해 다양한
연령대와 배경을 가진 커뮤니티와 연결될 수 있었으며, 그녀는 앞으로도 예술에 대한 열정을
통해 사람들을 치유하고 돕고자 합니다.

있습니다. 이번 달, 조이는 10월 9일부터 10월 23일까지 샌프란시스코
국제미술박물관(IAMA)(International Art Museum of America (IAMA) in San Francisco) 에서
자신의 개인 전시회를 개최하고 있습니다. 이번 전시회의 제목은 “연민(Compassion)”이며,
10월 12일 오후 1시부터 3시(PST)까지 리셉션이 열렸습니다. 리셉션에서는 다과가
제공되었고, 조이는 자신의 배경에 대해 이야기하고 작품을 발표했습니다.
이번 전시회의 주제는 “연민(Compassion): 분열과 고난으로 가득한 세상에서 연민은 간극을
메우고 인류애를 공유하게 하는 변혁적 힘으로 자리합니다. 저의 작품은 공감과 이해의 깊은
영향을 탐구하고 드러내고자 하며, 다양한 형태로 나타나는 연민의 섬세하지만 강력한 본질을
반영하려 합니다. 시각적 내러티브를 통해 연민이 치유하고, 연결하며, 개인과 공동체를
고양하는 데 있어 필수적인 역할을 한다는 점을 전달하고자 합니다. 친절한 순간들 속에서
발견되는 취약성과 강점을 집중적으로 조명함으로써, 저는 관객들이 자신이 가진 연민의 힘과
그것이 세상을 더욱 정의롭고 사랑으로 가득한 곳으로 만들 수 있는 가능성에 대해 성찰할 수
있기를 바랍니다.”
