Cornelis Lieste (1817-1861)

Winter Landscape with Painters

Born in Harlem in 1817, Cornelis Lieste can be counted as one of the top painters of the Dutch Romantic school. As a young man, he took studies with Jan Reekers and Nicolaas Roosenboom, where he learned the traditions of Dutch realist painting. Along with his contemporaries Rochussen, Sande Bakhuzen, and Verboeckhoven, he was at the forefront of mid-nineteenth century Netherlandish painting. In 1840 he continued his studies in Belgium and then in Germany before returning to Holland in 1841. In 1842 he was invited to show at the prestigious Felix Meritis exhibition in Amsterdam, where he was awarded a gold medal for a landscape work.
