Henri Joseph Duwee (1810-1884)

The Pretty Girl from Arles

Henri Joseph Duwee was born in Brussels in 1810, the son of the celebrated painter Henri Duwee, the young man soon showed a precocious talent as an artist. He took his first lessons from his father, but while still in his early teens he became a student of the most famous figure painter in the Lowlands at the time, Francois-Joseph Navez. It was Navez that convinced the young artist to pursue a career as a figure painter with a particular emphasis on historical works. From 1833 he exhibited his artwork widely, including exhibitions in Ghent and Brussels. Soon his reputation spread to other countries, and he was invited to show his paintings at important venues in Berlin and Vienna.
