Ren Bonian was a native to Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, where he lived until his father passed away when he was fifteen. After moving to Shanghai, he was introduced to Western culture. As a painter, he became part of the Qing Shanghai school that blended different techniques. While respected for his figure painting and portraiture, Ren Bonian was most highly regarded for his depictions of flower and bird scenes.
