Pierre Joseph Toussaint was born in Brussels in 1822. At the age of fourteen, he enrolled at the Academy of Brussels, where he was schooled in a traditionally Flemish manner. He remained there as a student and professor’s assistant until 1850, when he left to establish his own career. Within a few years, he was invited to exhibit at important salons in Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp. He painted mainly genre scenes on small scaled canvas.
