Town Scene with Figures
Born in Brussels in 1831, Hubert Bellis was a pupil at the Brussels Academy, where he received instruction from the great Belgian portrait painter, Francois-Joseph Navez. Continuing his education at the atelier of Henri de Coene, he decided from a young age to devote his career to still-life painting. His paintings of fruit, flowers, and frequently shellfish were extremely well received by the public and critics alike and garnered Bellis a tremendous reputation. After a long career, Hubert Bellis died at St. Joost-ten-Noode in 1902.
