Her work explores the ways trauma lingers in the body and imagination. Through paintings and installations, Emily translates trauma into fantastical forms—grinning rabbits that loom like childhood companions, chairs bound in rope to mirror the curvature of scoliosis, dreamlike scenes where play, pop, and fear coexist. These figures and objects are not literal retellings, but symbols. Emily’s documentary forms of photography contrasts the fictional reality of her other works, they tell a story through literal senses and motion. By merging pop surrealist language and photography with deeply personal narratives, Emily aim to reveal how family, childhood, resilience, and imagination interlace.

Emily Su is a Chinese American artist working in cross medium projects that often involves painting, photography, and installations. Her practice merges playful distortions of pop surrealism with personal exploration of memory, identity, imagination and the space of spirituality. A central thread in Emily’s work explores the world of childhood trauma and coping strategies that children often invent—imaginary friends.
