Monk Jigong

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

The Yousi Style

Mostly applied in figure painting, this technique uses gossamer-like fine lines to form the subject’s contours.

“Monk Jigong” is a figure in Buddhism, a holy Arhat known to almost everyone in China. He applied his vast supernatural powers to benefit the public. Through his boundless dharma powers, he helped and saved people, punished evil, and promoted goodness. In China, there have been many movies, television productions, and writings in which he is highly praised. With the wondrous touch of his brush, the artist applied the fine brushwork technique to realistically reveal details of the skin, meridians, and veins of Monk Jigong. Combining these two elements of fine brushwork and realism, the artist vividly portrayed the image of this figure who lived as a beggar in his daily life.

Monk Jigong outwardly appeared to be an ugly, drunken man, a crazy beggar in ragged clothes. However, hidden deep in his heart was a determination to benefit living beings out of great compassion. All day long he constantly helped people, feeling it was his duty to provide others with happiness.
