Daniel Vertangen (1601 – ca.1683)

Painting with an exceptional attention to detail, Daniel Vertangen produced some of the finest figure paintings in the Lowlands during the middle of the 17th century. His subjects ranged from the mythological to the biblical and from pure portraiture to contemporary landscapes. His figures owe a great deal to the influence of his teacher and mentor, the Utrecht painter Cornelis Van Poelenburgh (1586-1667). As with Van Poelenburgh, his draftsmanship and ability to paint flesh tones are of the highest standards.

Daniel Vertnangen was born in the city of The Hague, Holland in 1598. His paintings are highly prized today amongst collectors of Netherlandish paintings of the 17th century and are housed in museum throughout the world, including the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhaguen and the National Museum of Sweden in Stockholm.
